Which chair for whom

Start from the person, not the chair.

Someone at a screen all day

The Curvo. The lumbar support adjusts itself, so it finds the person instead of waiting for them to find a lever, the headrest moves for height and the mechanism sets its own tension. Seat depth is an upgrade on the page.

A whole open plan team

The Astra or the Aegis, from R 3 737.50 incl VAT (R 3 250 ex VAT). Adjustable lumbar on every chair, and the mechanism and arms can be set per person on the same order, so the people who need more get more and the rest of the budget holds.

Shared and hot desks

Nobody stops to set a tension knob at a desk they do not own, so choose a mechanism that sets itself. The Metro does it with adjustable lumbar and seat depth; the Contour adds a built in head support, so there is almost nothing left to adjust.

Someone with back trouble

The NetOne is the chair we point to: the lumbar pivots to follow the small of the back, the seat slides for leg length and the arms move three ways. It is endorsed by the South African Society of Physiotherapy. If they see a physio, ask which adjustments matter and we will match a chair to the answer.

Taller people, or longer legs

Look for seat depth adjustment, which slides the seat forward so the thighs are supported to near the knee. It is standard on the Metro, NetOne, Contour and Thrive, and an upgrade on the Astra, Aegis, Xara and Curvo.

People who do not like mesh

The GetOne has an upholstered back with a patented lumbar support behind it, and the back locks at any angle. It is endorsed by the South African Society of Physiotherapy and covered in fabric, bonded leather or genuine leather.

Someone who leans back to think

The Arcus. The synchro tilt moves seat and back together as you lean, so it follows you instead of tipping you out of your reading position, and it locks where you stop.

A director who wants leather

The Kahuna Executive looks like an executive chair and sits like a task chair: a synchro mechanism with a four position recline lock, a contoured lumbar and a 150 kg rating. For leather with a mesh back, the Thrive has a leatherette seat and headrest and lumbar that adjusts for height and depth.

Mechanisms, plainly

What is under the seat, and what it does for you.

The mechanism decides how a chair moves when you lean back. It is the part that matters most for someone in a chair all day, and the part most sellers never mention.

Single lock

The back rocks with you and locks upright. A knob under the seat sets how firmly it rocks and a lever sets the seat height.

Suits Fine for people who sit upright and do not recline much.

On Standard on the Astra, Aegis and Xara.

Infinite lock synchro

Seat and back tilt together, the back further than the seat, and lock at any angle you choose rather than only one.

Suits The smallest step up that makes a real difference.

On The first upgrade on the Astra, Aegis and Xara.

Synchro with tension adjustment

Seat and back tilt together, the back further than the seat, and a knob sets how firmly the back pushes against you.

Suits One person in one chair, who will set it once.

On Standard on the Vantage, NetOne, Thrive and Kahuna Executive, and an upgrade on the GetOne.

Auto tension synchro

Seat and back tilt together and the resistance sets itself to your weight, so there is no knob to adjust.

Suits Shared desks, and anyone who never touches a lever.

On Standard on the Curvo, Contour, Metro, Arcus and Maverick Meshback, and an upgrade on the Astra, Aegis and Xara.

Auto tension synchro with seat depth

Seat and back tilt together, the resistance sets itself to your weight, and the seat slides forward or back to fit the length of your legs.

Suits Taller people, and offices where people of every size share a chair.

On The top upgrade on the Curvo, Astra, Aegis and Xara.

Back that locks at any angle

The seat stays put and the backrest angle adjusts and locks wherever you stop it, rather than at the nearest notch.

Suits People who like a fixed, firm back at their own angle.

On Standard on the GetOne.

Setting up

Set the chair up in two minutes.

The chair, from the floor up

Seat height first. Sit right back and raise or lower the seat until your feet are flat on the floor and your thighs are about level, knees roughly in line with your hips.

Seat depth next, if the chair has it. Slide the seat until there is a gap of two or three fingers between the front edge and the back of your knee.

Then the lumbar. Move it up or down until it sits in the small of your back, just above your belt. It should feel like support, not a push.

Then the arms, just below the height of the desk, so your shoulders drop and your elbows rest at roughly a right angle. If the arms stop you getting close to the desk, lower them or take them off.

Last, the tension. Lean back. The chair should follow you and bring you back up without you working for it or falling through it.

The desk matters as much as the chair

A fixed desk is made for an average person. If you raise the chair to suit the desk, your feet leave the floor; if you lower it to suit your legs, your arms reach up. A footrest fixes the first. A height adjustable desk fixes both, and lets you stand for part of the day, which a good chair cannot do for you.

Put the top of the screen at about eye level and an arm's length away, with the keyboard close enough that your elbows stay by your sides.

Kitting out a team

Ten or more chairs is a different job. Order the whole floor at once so the fabric matches, set the mechanism and arms per person on the same quote, and sit in one first: a sample chair is delivered on free loan so the office can try it before committing.

If the desks and storage are changing too, plan the whole office, priced, and the chairs, desks and pedestals come back on one quote.

Questions

Questions buyers ask about ergonomic chairs.

What makes an office chair ergonomic?

Three things: lumbar support in the small of the back, a mechanism that lets the seat and back move with you, and enough adjustment to fit the person sitting in it, at least seat height and arms, ideally seat depth too. Every chair on this page has at least one of the three, and most have all of them.

How much does an ergonomic office chair cost in Cape Town?

A mesh task chair with adjustable lumbar starts at R 3 737.50 incl VAT (R 3 250 ex VAT). A chair endorsed by the South African Society of Physiotherapy starts at R 4 335.50 incl VAT (R 3 770 ex VAT), and full adjustment with seat depth and 3D arms starts at R 9 244.85 incl VAT (R 8 039 ex VAT).

Which ergonomic chair is best for back pain?

We are not physiotherapists, so we would rather match a chair to what theirs says. The NetOne is the chair we point to most: pivoting lumbar, seat depth and arms that move three ways. The Vantage, Metro, GetOne and NetOne are endorsed by the South African Society of Physiotherapy.

Mesh or upholstered back?

Mesh breathes, holds its shape and suits a warm Cape Town office. An upholstered back feels softer and more formal. For upholstery, the GetOne has a padded back with a patented lumbar support, and the Kahuna Executive a contoured lumbar in bonded leather. Everything else on this page has a mesh back.

What is a synchro mechanism?

The seat and back tilt together as you lean, the back further than the seat, so your feet stay on the floor and your eyes stay level with the screen. Auto tension versions set the resistance to your weight by themselves.

Can we try a chair before ordering for the whole office?

Yes. A sample chair is delivered on free loan so the office can sit in it before committing to a floor.

What does the guarantee cover?

Each chair's guarantee is printed beside it above. The Curvo, Astra, Aegis, Xara, Arcus and Maverick carry five years against manufacturing defects in normal office use. The Vantage, Metro, GetOne, NetOne, Contour, Thrive and Kahuna Executive carry five years on the mechanism and one on the upholstery. Fair wear and tear is excluded.

How long does delivery take?

Most chairs are made to order in two to three weeks. Your quote carries a delivery date, and delivery in greater Cape Town is included.

Are the prices including VAT?

Every price is shown including VAT, with the ex VAT figure beside it. Your quote shows both.

Do you deliver outside Cape Town?

Yes, nationally. Delivery outside greater Cape Town is quoted as a separate line.
